Clio 172 Exhaust Information

Renault Clio 172 Exhausts

RenaultSport Clio 172 and 172 Cup exhausts are notoriously poor quality and often have to be replaced with stainless steel aftermarket systems. Find out more about stealth, sports and race systems from ReadyForTheTrack.

Clio 172 Stealth Exhaust System

Clio 172 Stealth Exhaust

Clio 172 Stealth Exhaust

A stealth exhaust system is one that is hidden behind the 172 rear bumper – in much the same fashion as the original exhaust system. The YozzaSport 172 exhaust system is intended to be a replacement system to the standard 172 exhaust. This is due to the common failure of the standard system. We wanted to offer our customers the high quality of our products, but without the performance and noise increases that often come with them.

Clio 172 Race Exhaust System

YozzaSport 2.5" Race Exhaust System

Clio 172 Race Exhaust From YozzaSport

A race system is often a 2.5″ or 2.25″ system without any large silencers in the centre pipe.  YozzaSport 172 race systems have a small bullet silencer in the centre section to remove some levels of boom from the system. Our race systems are re-packable, and often are run with a Clio 182 Exhaust manifold and join pipe.

Clio 172 Sports Exhaust System

A sport exhaust system normally will offer some performance gains, but without the noise that is associated with a full blown race system. To offer an alternative or an option to YozzaSport 172 Exhaust customers, we have developed both a 2.5″ Race Derived system, and a 2.25″ Road intended system.

Clio 172 Cup Rear Brake Effort Low MOT Failure

MOT Issues with RenaultSport Clio 172 / 182′s

Many 172 Cup and Clio182 owners find that their Cup’s will fail MOT’s with a low rear braking effort.
This isn’t a failure, it is simply that the car is set up to have a low rear braking effort.
You need to print out the document from VOSA – below: 172 Cup rear brake effort low

Renault Clio 172, 172 Cup, 182 and 182 Cup & Trophy Servicing

RenaultSport Clio 2.0 16v 172, 172 Cup, 182 and 182 Cup & Trophy Major and Minor Servicing Parts

Servicing RenaultSport Clio 172 and 182

RenaultSport Clio’s require servicing every 12,000 miles. You should find here a comprehensive list of all of the parts that you would require to do a minor service , and accessory belt service (36k) and major cambelt service (72k or 5 years).

I get lots of requests from people for service parts and service quotes for the 172 & 182 Clio’s and the occasional request for the Clio V6. Obviously one of the main things is “How much will it cost” – What most people forget is what they should ask – “How much could it cost?” Imagine a £500 service + Front Discs, Front Pads as well as the same on the rear – you are looking at double that. Ignore the possibility of a driveshaft or a shock and you could end up with a big bill.

Here are some of the parts that you will require…

RenaultSport Clio 172/182 Engine Mounts

RenaultSport Clio 172′s and 182 (in both the Full Fat (FF), lightweight cup varieties and the Clio 182 Trophy) are all terrible when it comes to problems with engine mounts. The cars are just that little bit too much for the factory engine mounts as standard and you will find many will clunk as you pull off from stationary. You know that it is a little bit more of an issue when you experience this with every gear change. If you wish to buy a Group N engine mount kit click here.

RenaultSport Group N Engine Mount Kit

If you are running a race car, or a rally car it is more than likely that you consider the standard engine mounts a consumable item – especially if you are running a car that has more horse-power than standard. I have found that anything over 200 bhp and you will start to destroy mounts if you drive it harder than pootling about.

The options for you are few and far between, you either replace all of the mounts with original renault items, and hope for the best, or you replace the one that you think is causing the problem, and then end up replacing all of them anyway, as you were incorrect.

I have included the drawings of the PH1 172 (CB0M)  and PH2 (172 [CB1N], 182 and Trophy) engine mounts below.

Ph1 172 Engine Mount Kit (CB0M) – £243 from YozzaSport

PH2 172 182 and Trophy Engine Mount Kit (CB1N, CB22) – £159.99 From YozzaSport

RenaultSport Clio 172 Ph II and 182 Engine Mount Kit

In my experience customers have tried a few different things to resolve their engine mount problems. Firstly they have used rubber hardener on the mounts, this doesn’t work. They have tried replacing the rubbers with poly eurethane replacements from powerflex and ktec racing’s two offerings – the second being the Powerflex kit this in my experience leads to the following problem – the next weakest part fails. If you replace the dogbone mount with a poly bush, the mount on top of the gearbox fails, promptly followed by the front subframe engine mount, and then they destroy the strut top mount together within a matter of hours of hard driving.

The only real solution that I have discovered to the problem is not a cheap one at £983.67 – however, it is very effective – the RenaultSport Group N engine mount kit pictured below:

Complete RenaultSport Group N Engine Mount Kit For The Clio 172 and 182

The kit is a complete set of engine mounts from the Group N and Group A rally cars, and is more than enough to cope with what most road and track cars can throw at it. With a strengthened(solid) dogbone mount and solid front subframe mount, re-enforced battery tray, stronger strut top mount, and gearbox mount, this engine mount kit will stand the test of time. Whilst costing more in the short term, you are likely to save in the long term if you are using the car as a trackday toy or as a race car.

It is important to note that the engine mounts from the clio cup race car are not the same – as the subfr
ame assembly is quite different due to the sequential sadev gearbox. The engine is mounted to the subframe a lot more securely meaning that the race car does not suffer with the same problems that the road car suffers with.

I hope this answers any queries relating to the engine mounts issues that most people who own a 172 or 182 will suffer with during the period of ownership.
