Clio Williams No. 226 History and Information

- Clio Williams 1 No. 226 Plaque
Clio Williams No. 226 was originally the prize car won by Allister Lolye for the Gerard MotorSport team at the end of the 1993 RenaultSport Clio Cup Championship. The vehicle is No. 226 of a total of 400 UK Cars.
It has a leather folder full of all of the information about the history of the car and a full list of receipts and purchases for everything related to the car, including all old MOT certificates confirming the milage as genuine and demonstrating that the car has been owned by genuine enthusiasts throughout its life.
I purchased the car earlier this year to mechanically restore it, as it was in need of some TLC as the clutch had gone and the former owner had been made reduntant and didn’t plan to replace it. The car also needed a few items sourcing to bring it back to its former glory and to make it an original condition vehicle again.
22-02-09 Vehicle Purchase By Andrew Hughes on Trade Purchase Slip
MOT was carried out on – April 3rd 2009 – 103099 miles
The following points were highlighted as advisory items:
- Nearside front Macpherson strut has slight movement in the upper support bearing
- Offside front Macpherson strut has slight movement in the upper support bearing
- Engine Noise
The engine noise that was mentioned on the MOT advisory note was Cambelt slap and it was decided that the Cambelt and Accessory belts would be changed to provide the new owner with a mechanically sound vehicle. These have been changed, and the vehicle runs perfectly.
The vehicle has been dry stored over the Summer of 2009 and has had the following works undertaken in my free time:
- New Clutch (Valeo) Kit
- Renault Cambelt Kit
- Renault Accessory Belt
- Brembo HC Front Discs
- Ferodo DS2500 Front and Rear Brake Pads
- 4 x 185/55/15 Toyo Proxy T1-R
- Replacement O/S Driveshaft
- Valeo Radiator
- Replacement Oil and Renault Filter
- Replacement (Valeo) N/S Fog light
- Exhaust Centre Section Repacked
The following parts are supplied with the car as there are a few elements that are non original items or that are missing.
I am supplying these items with the car, rather than fitting them and trying to hide the fact that the car isn’t quite original. These items are as follows:
- Original Clio Williams parcel shelf and suit carrier as the one currently in the car is a Clio 1.8 16v item.
- Replacement gearbox tunnel plastic trim, as at some point a car phone kit has been fitted into the passenger foot well – it has been removed without damaging the item more and pop riveted to hide the holes, but a replacement item is supplied.
- Replacement dash cowling between the steering wheel and instrument panel, as initial immobiliser fob had been installed into this trim.
- Replacement plastic engine covers.
- Replacement Clio Williams rear ¼ trims. The rear quarter panel trims are not black as they should be – I ordered the replacement items from Renault, and they arrived in Silver, exactly as per the items on the car. I then discovered that all that needs to happen is that some Renault black tape needs applying to these trims to make them “Williams” items, rather than 1.8 16v items.
- Brand New Renault Water pump – I thought that there may be some movement in the one on there – there wasn’t it was sound, and didn’t require replacing.
- Replacement Williams Decals (non Renault) as the ones on there are a little faded.
Items that you may wish to amend / faults
- O/S rear arch is rusting slightly.
- N/S rear arch could also do with some attention; however the condition is not bad at all.
- Driver’s door has a small ding in the metal work above the mirror.
- A small patch of rust on the rear tailgate.
- Driver’s seat has had a small repair to the cloth at some point in its history. It is about 9mm long and is not very noticeable at all.
- The exhaust heat shield is missing – these are £60 from Renault – I can supply the part number if necessary.

RenaultSport UK Announces New 2009 Trackdays
RENAULTSPORT REVS UP FOR 2009 TRACKDAY CALENDAR

RenaultSport UK Trackdays Picture of Megane R26.R
Renault has a glowing reputation for building great hot hatches with the Mégane Renaultsport R26.R, new Clio Renaultsport 200 and the Twingo Renaultsport 133. However, if you think they’re good on the road, just imagine how entertaining they are on a track. Now owner’s get the chance to find out how much fun each of the pocket rockets are as Renaultsport announces trackday dates for 2009.
Owners can book their chosen event through the revised Renaultsport website where they’ll be in for a treat with a host of new content and upgraded features covering all aspects of Renaultsport from roadcars to race cars, from track days to brilliant heritage video footage plus a lively forum section.
The UK still accounts for more sales of the French marque’s high-performance Renaultsport models than anywhere else in the world. The popular Renaultsport trackdays have been running since 2002 and this year’s trackday calendar takes in two of the country’s best-known race circuits, including Oulton Park in Cheshire and the picturesque Lincolnshire circuit of Cadwell Park. For the more time-pressed thrill-seeker, there are evening track sessions at Bedford Autodrome.
Motoring Nirvana
Designed by enthusiasts specifically for fellow driving enthusiasts, the trackdays represent motoring nirvana for Renaultsport owners and their cars by providing a friendly and informal, yet safety-conscious environment.
Improving driver ability is an important element of Renaultsport track days. Every circuit has experienced and trained instructors, who are able to offer personalised tips to improve car control. Attendees can bring along a trusted friend to share their car, as second drivers are free.
As part of the programme, drivers can also get behind the wheel of the latest high performance Renaultsport exotica for a few grin-inducing laps with a choice of the Twingo Renaultsport 133, the newly-launched Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup or the Mégane Renaultsport R26.R. They also have the chance to enjoy a “hot” lap in either car from the passenger seat with a qualified instructor at the wheel.
Emphasising Renault’s performance know-how and inventive design at each event will also be two attention-grabbing, pristine two-seaters from Renault UK’s heritage collection: the Renaultsport Spider and the mighty Clio Renaultsport V6 255.
Speaking about the popularity of the Renault trackdays, Emmanuel Bouvier, Marketing Director said, “Renaultsport trackdays are the ideal way of letting our customers share our passion for Renaultsport as well as giving them the opportunity to realise the full potential of their cars in a safe and enthusiastic environment. We’re looking forward to seeing these special events grow even more popular in the months and years ahead.”

Looking to Buy a Race Car?
Race Cars For Sale
Looking for a car to compete in can be an ardous task, we hope that our page here will develop into a page where you will be able to find all of the resources that you will need when you are looking for a race car this is for sale.
Some of my thoughts about Buying a Race Car
The main thing to consider when you are looking is that different people will advertise their race cars in different places. If you are looking for a classic race car then the likelihood is that you won’t find it in a sports car or modern motorsport publication (either online or offline). If you are looking for a specialist vehicle, you are best looking towards a specialist publication – eg. Porsche Race cars aren’t going to be advertised in performance BMW are they, so why would a specific race car be marketed on a general motorsports site?
A good offline publication to look at for Fast Road and Trackday cars would be something like TRC, they have a few pages of classifieds or PistonHeads which I mention later in the article. – Track and Race Cars Magazine
I would recomend that when looking to buy a race car that you research the kind of specification that you feel that you will need to have to compete at the level that you want to compete at. For example if you are looking to compete at the top level of any championship, in my opinion, you are going to need to do one of two things:
a) Build a car from scratch that is as good as or better specification than the race cars that are leading the championship
b) Build a similar spec race car to cars that are competing well and drive considerably better than those leading the championship currently
In championships where the car is a standard (Eg. Clio Cup UK) then you will probably need to consider the following: a new shell is going to be paramount if you are planting it at the front of the grid – I was told that with the old clio cup cars that a new shell was worth 2/10ths around Brands Hatch? If you are going down this route, then it is probably more sensible to consider buying a new car over a second hand vehicle… as the costs of migrating the setup into a new shell are going to be pretty prohibative.
Where to Look to Buy a Race Car?
RaceCarsForSale – A Leading International Site for selling Race Cars
Raced and Rallied – A well known online portal for buying and selling race cars throughout Europe.
eRacingCars – A well respected site with all scales of cars advertised online. I like it more than most.
Race Cars Direct – A personal favourite of mine, it attracts more of the big money race cars (GT3/LMS), but there are plenty of good deals to be had.
Motorsport Ads – Another good site for race cars in the UK & abroad. Also powers the motorsport classifieds on Crash.net
Pistonheads – Pistonheads is one of those sites that always throws up some oddities, supercars and hatchbacks side by site. Its always worth a gander.
FastRoadandTrack – One that I have seen about, but never really used.
750MC – 750 Motorclub Race Car Classifieds.
The list isn’t by any means intended to be exhaustive, but I will add to it when I get time – its intended to be a gesture in the right direction for those of you looking for race cars.
Always a Hooligan,
/y0z
